The Realm of the Senses (Ai no Corrida - L'Empire des Sens - 1976)

This film could be considered a tribute to Elio Petri towards the painting.

Even from the opening credits we see the numerous references to the visual arts, they are interspersed with shots of famous works of art. Their choice of graphics, very innovative for the period, was inspired by many artistic movements.

The use of arrows, letters, numbers and punctuation typographical enlarged, strictly painted in black, superimposed on bright areas of color with quick gestural interventions, there refers to a group of artists, one in particular: the greek Jannis exponent of conceptual art.

After the opening credits, the film opens on an image that clearly reveals his inspiration with Body art: an artistic expression that is characterized by the use of the body, led by cruel and sadomasochistic rituals often at the limits of human endurance. Franco Nero sat on a chair-bound, in an apparent state of trans, reminiscent of the happenings of many artists inspired by this art form, the French Gina Pane, the German Hermann Nitsch, the American Chris Burden, Valie Export from Austria, to name a few.
